EU to Ban PlayStation and Xbox Sales to Russia Over Military Use

The European Union is preparing a new round of sanctions against Russia, which will include banning the sale of game consoles such as Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox. The move is aimed at preventing the Russian military from using these devices to control drones deployed in its war against Ukraine. The ban is part of a broader package of restrictions to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began on February 24, 2022.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas confirmed the plan, stating that European officials are examining all products that contribute to Russia’s military efforts. According to reports, Russian forces have been repurposing gaming consoles for drone operations, highlighting their continued reliance on civilian electronics due to Western sanctions limiting access to advanced military technology.

Since the start of the invasion, Western nations have severely restricted Russia’s ability to purchase military-grade components, forcing Moscow to adapt. Intelligence reports from Ukraine and its allies indicate that Russia has resorted to using semiconductors from household appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines in its missile and drone systems. This underscores the effectiveness of previous sanctions in crippling Russia’s access to modern military technology.

Although major gaming companies, including Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, have already ceased official sales in Russia since March 2022, the new EU sanctions will specifically target third-party traders who continue to supply the Russian market, including those dealing in second-hand consoles. The crackdown aims to close any remaining loopholes and further disrupt Russia’s ability to sustain its war machine.

Kallas emphasised the importance of tightening economic pressure on Moscow while continuing military and financial support for Ukraine. The upcoming sanctions package, expected to be finalised in February, reflects the EU’s commitment to countering Russia’s aggression through strategic economic measures.
