United States President Donald Trump announced a significant increase in tariffs on Chinese goods, raising them to 125%. This decision was made in response to what Trump described as China’s “lack of respect” for world markets. The new tariffs, which came into effect immediately, are part of an escalating trade dispute between the US and China.
Trump shared this announcement on his social media platform, Truth Social, explaining that the decision to raise tariffs was driven by China’s unfair trade practices. He stated, “Given the disrespect that China has shown to world markets, I am raising the tariffs charged on China by the United States to 125%, effective immediately. At some point, I hope in the near future, China will realise that the days of robbing the US and other countries are no longer sustainable or acceptable.”
In addition to the tariff increase, Trump also revealed that he had authorised a 90-day pause on the introduction of new US tariffs. During this period, mutual tariffs between the two nations will be reduced by 10%. This reduction will also take effect immediately and is intended to provide temporary relief amidst the ongoing trade conflict.
This move comes in response to a series of retaliatory measures from China. Starting on April 10, China is set to increase additional tariffs on American imports from 34% to 84%. This increase is a direct reaction to the new US restrictions, which have imposed tariffs of up to 104% on Chinese imports.
This escalating trade war between the US and China shows no sign of slowing down. The tariff increases and the ongoing back-and-forth between the two economic giants have created a tense environment for global trade. More than 75 countries have urged US representatives to address the issue and find a resolution to the trade standoff.
