France Provides Ukraine with Advanced Satellite Intelligence

French artificial intelligence and aerospace company Safran.AI will support Ukraine by processing satellite images for military intelligence. The agreement, signed in February 2025, is expected to strengthen Ukraine’s surveillance capabilities as concerns grow over a possible reduction in intelligence sharing from the United States.Аналіз супутникового знімка від Safran Group

The Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence will use Safran.AI’s technology to analyse satellite imagery, helping Ukrainian forces monitor Russian troop movements in occupied territories and within Russia. Previously, the United States played a key role in supplying Ukraine with crucial intelligence, but with shifting political dynamics in Washington, Ukraine has looked to European allies for alternative sources.

Safran.AI, a division of the French multinational aerospace and defence company Safran Group, specialises in artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies. The company’s expertise in analysing high resolution satellite images is expected to enhance Ukraine’s ability to detect and track Russian military activity. Although details of the platform’s capabilities remain classified, deep learning technologies are commonly used to identify objects such as aircraft, military bases, and vehicles.

France’s commitment to supporting Ukraine with intelligence comes at a critical time. Reports indicate that American satellite company Maxar, a key provider of commercial satellite imagery for Ukraine, has limited Ukraine’s access to its data. Maxar’s intelligence has previously been vital in tracking Russian troop movements and verifying damage to enemy assets.

A recent satellite image from Maxar Technologies showed a destroyed Russian Su 57 fighter jet at the Akhtubinsk airfield, underscoring the importance of such intelligence in modern warfare. With Safran.AI now stepping in, Ukraine will continue to receive vital reconnaissance support, ensuring its defence forces have the information needed to counter Russian military operations.
