Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has responded to Elon Musk’s claim that Ukraine’s entire front line would collapse if SpaceX’s Starlink systems were shut down. Sikorski reminded Musk that Poland funds Ukraine’s Starlink access at an annual cost of 50 million dollars and warned that if SpaceX proves unreliable, Poland will seek other providers.
The remarks came after Musk posted on social media X, stating that he had challenged Russian President Vladimir Putin to a physical duel and that Starlink was crucial for Ukraine’s military operations. He claimed that the war had reached a deadlock and that Ukraine was inevitably losing.
Sikorski firmly dismissed the idea that Ukraine’s defence depends on a single provider. The Polish Ministry of Digitalization, which finances Ukraine’s access to Starlink, has been clear that if Musk’s company cannot be trusted, Poland will not hesitate to find alternatives. This signals growing frustration with Musk’s statements, which have been criticised in the past for appearing to align with Russian narratives.
Musk’s influence in Ukraine’s defence has been a subject of controversy, with Starlink playing a vital role in frontline communications. His comments suggesting he could unilaterally cut off Ukraine’s access have raised concerns among allies, particularly as Ukraine continues to resist Russian aggression.
Poland has been one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters, providing significant military and financial assistance since the full scale invasion began. The country has also played a key role in supplying Starlink terminals, ensuring Ukrainian forces maintain secure and reliable communication across the battlefield.
