Trump Warns of New Sanctions on Russia if Putin Rejects Talks

US President Donald Trump has warned that he will likely impose new sanctions on Russia if President Vladimir Putin refuses to enter negotiations over the ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump made the statement during a speech, where he emphasised the importance of dialogue between the two leaders.

The US president noted that he was ready to speak with Putin at any time and that he would be willing to meet with him to discuss the situation. “Zelensky would like to have peace. But it takes two to tango. We’ll see what happens,” said Trump, highlighting that both sides must be willing to come to the table for peace talks.

Trump also shared that he had recently discussed the war in Ukraine with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The phone conversation, which took place shortly after Trump’s inauguration on January 20, also touched upon Ukraine’s desire for peace. Trump expressed hope that Putin would be willing to engage in negotiations, as failure to reach an agreement could lead to disastrous consequences for Russia itself.

“I think Russia has big problems. Just look at inflation in Russia… I would hope he wants to make a deal,” said Trump. He also made it clear that his ultimate goal was to end the war as quickly as possible. “This war should never have started,” he added, reiterating his view that peace must be reached soon.

Furthermore, Trump’s newly appointed Secretary of State, Mark Rubio, also addressed the situation, indicating that both Russia and Ukraine would have to make concessions to bring the war to an end. Rubio stressed that both sides must be prepared to give up something to secure peace.
