Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto have criticised the recent meeting of European leaders in Paris, where discussions focused on the potential deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine. Both leaders are openly against military support for Kyiv and oppose Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
Fico stated that the European Union has no role in decisions regarding the deployment of troops in Ukraine and questioned why high-ranking EU representatives attended the Paris meeting. He argued that such matters should only be resolved through a UN mandate or bilateral agreements between Ukraine and willing countries.

Opposes Ukraine joining NATO. |
Rejects sending Slovak troops to Ukraine. |
Claims Ukraine will lose territory and face foreign military control. |
Supports Ukraine’s EU integration but predicts obstacles. |
Szijjarto, speaking from Kazakhstan, claimed that European leaders were trying to prevent peace in Ukraine due to concerns about Donald Trump’s potential return to power. He alleged that pro-Kremlin and anti-Republican European leaders convened in Paris to influence the geopolitical landscape and obstruct peace efforts.
The Hungarian minister praised Trump’s approach to foreign policy, highlighting the resumption of dialogue between the US and Russia. He also welcomed high-level talks between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, which he believes could lead to a peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine. Hungarian officials continue to oppose military assistance for Ukraine.
Fidesz communications director Tamás Menzer reinforced this stance, stating that Ukraine should neither join NATO nor the EU. He echoed Trump’s belief that Ukraine will not be able to reclaim all its occupied territories.
The Paris summit was held as a response to recent US statements and aims to establish European security guarantees for Ukraine. European leaders are seeking ways to support Kyiv independently of American policies.
