The Canadian defence manufacturer Roshel has reached a new milestone, delivering its 1700th Senator armoured vehicle to Ukraine. The company has provided more armoured vehicles to Ukraine than any other manufacturer. Roman Shimonov, the founder of Roshel, highlighted the significance of this achievement in an interview with CP24.
Roshel’s production facility in Ontario employs 500 full time workers, assembling 12 Senator vehicles per month. Despite positive feedback from the Ukrainian military, the Canadian government has not yet committed to funding additional vehicle purchases. More than 90 percent of the 1700 armoured vehicles supplied to Ukraine were funded by foreign governments, while Canada contributed only 10 percent.
The Senator vehicle is known for its cost effectiveness, priced at 600,000 US dollars per unit. Each vehicle is assembled within two weeks, making production highly efficient. Built on the chassis of a heavy duty Ford truck, the vehicle undergoes modifications to enhance its suitability for frontline operations. Its ballistic protection is designed to withstand shots from 5.56mm and 7.62mm calibre bullets at a range of 30 metres, with a projectile speed of 695 metres per second.
Additional mine protection can be installed, allowing the vehicle to withstand explosives of up to four kilograms and anti tank mines placed under its wheels or chassis. Equipped with a 400 horsepower engine, the vehicle delivers excellent off road performance. The Senator has proven its effectiveness in Ukraine, where it is also being used as a command and staff vehicle. It can transport up to ten fully equipped soldiers while providing high level protection against explosives and enemy ambushes.
Roshel previously delivered its 1400th Senator to Ukraine in September 2024, following the milestone of 1000 vehicles in December 2023. The production rate has accelerated significantly, with 300 additional vehicles supplied in just five months, demonstrating a steady increase in output to meet Ukraine’s growing battlefield needs.
