IRIS-T SLS Air Defence System Integrated on Iveco 4×4 for Ukraine

Ukraine has recently received a significant upgrade in its air defence capabilities with the integration of the IRIS-T SLS anti-aircraft missile system on an Iveco 4×4 truck chassis. This new configuration was revealed through a photo published by the Air Command West, showcasing the system in action.

The IRIS-T SLS system, mounted on the Iveco 4×4 Eurocargo truck, features a launcher capable of carrying four IRIS-T missiles, known as AIM-2000. This version of the system has been customised to meet the needs of the Ukrainian military, marking a significant step forward in its defence capabilities. The IRIS-T SLS is known for its ability to target and intercept enemy aircraft, helicopters, and UAVs, offering critical protection to ground forces in contested areas.

This integration on an Iveco truck chassis was likely chosen due to the vehicle’s wide availability in the European market, making it easier for maintenance and logistics. The lack of detection and guidance systems on the vehicle itself suggests that these functions are handled by another platform, such as a radar system like the TRML-4D, which helps guide the missiles to their targets.

So far, Ukraine has received 10 IRIS-T SLS systems, with 14 additional units expected in the future. The first IRIS-T SLS systems were delivered in August 2023, as part of a broader military aid package from Germany, which included two full batteries. The continued flow of these advanced systems demonstrates the growing support Ukraine is receiving from its Western allies in the fight against Russian aggression.

The IRIS-T SLS system is designed to protect ground troops by intercepting a range of airborne threats at distances of up to 12 kilometres and altitudes of up to 8 kilometres. The system’s infrared homing guidance offers precise targeting, crucial for countering aerial threats like enemy aircraft and drones.

As part of Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its air defences, this system represents another step in modernising the country’s military infrastructure with advanced Western technology. The integration of these missile systems is expected to enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend its airspace and counter Russian aerial operations.
