Ukrainian forces successfully captured a Russian soldier using only an FPV drone, without a single shot being fired. The operation was carried out by the 13th Operational Brigade of Ukraine’s National Guard, known as Khartiia.
A video released by the brigade shows the Russian soldier noticing the FPV drone approaching. Realising the situation, he discarded his weapon, raised his hands, and signalled his intent to surrender. Ukrainian operators then used the drone to guide the soldier out of the tree line, carefully controlling his movements from a distance. A Mavic drone later took over surveillance as the surrender continued.
This event marks a rare instance of a Russian soldier surrendering to an FPV drone. Typically, drone-guided surrenders involve commercial quadcopters like the DJI Mavic. The use of a fast-moving FPV drone in this context is seen as a significant evolution in battlefield tactics.
A similar event was recorded in 2024 near Kharkiv, where Khartiia soldiers located a wounded Russian soldier who had been left behind by his unit. The Ukrainian team dropped a bottle of water and a note with surrender instructions using a drone. Once the soldier complied, the drone operator guided him to safety.
The soldier was given medical treatment and evacuated in an Oncilla armoured vehicle. He was later sent to a detention centre and eventually exchanged for a Ukrainian prisoner of war.
