Ukrainian Air Assault Forces have successfully repelled repeated Russian offensives in the Kursk region, inflicting significant losses on the enemy. This comes after multiple attempts by Russian forces to advance in the area, particularly around the settlements of Novaya Sorochina and Viktorivka. Ukrainian forces, including paratroopers, have been using a variety of advanced military tactics and technologies to push back the attackers.
The Ukrainian Air Assault Forces have actively engaged Russian infantry using a combination of artillery, anti-tank systems, and FPV drones. These tactics have proven effective in neutralising enemy personnel and armoured vehicles attempting to storm Ukrainian defensive positions. In a recent operation, Ukrainian forces managed to destroy multiple Russian attack aircraft and heavy military assets, showcasing their technological advantage.
According to data from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the scale of Russian losses in the region has been devastating. Since the start of the operation in August 2024, Russia has lost 36,000 soldiers, with 15,000 of those killed. Furthermore, the Russian military has lost considerable hardware, including 104 tanks, 575 armoured combat vehicles, and over 1,000 vehicles. In total, they have also lost 330 artillery systems, 12 multiple-launch rocket systems, 12 air defence systems, and numerous drones and helicopters.
The Ukrainian forces also reported the capture of 27 Russian soldiers, including officers, sergeants, and soldiers from various Russian military units. These prisoners included personnel from motorised rifle units, marines, and airborne troops, hailing from different regions of Russia and the temporarily occupied city of Sevastopol in Crimea.
In one notable incident, two Ukrainian paratroopers from the 79th Air Assault Brigade captured 14 Russian soldiers from the 91st Regiment after they mistook the Ukrainian attack as friendly fire. Realising they were under Ukrainian assault, the Russian soldiers surrendered without a fight.
